A press list, or media list, is a list of the media contacts and influencers specific to your industry/location, including their contact information and niche. Moreover, press list is used to get your brand’s story covered in digital and print media. Create a press list..
Why do you need a press list?
Becuase with a press list, you can get results from media easier and quicker because you can sort through which media cover which topics and might be interested in your story.
You shouldn’t just send out your news to anyone on the internet because journalists and influencers are looking for specific topics that fit their niche. If you send a story to the wrong media, you will lose credibility and waste time. For instance, if you send a story about diet and fitness to a home décor influencer, they will almost certainly ignore you.
Benefits of a press list
A press list allows you to save time, build relationships and increase the likelihood of the media sharing your story. Because a media list is a filtered list of only the media that cover your topics, you can save time sending blast emails pitches that are never read.
Furthermore, as you continually focus on the media on your list, you can build relationships and over time the media will be more open to working with you. That means you are more likely to see journalists and influencers cover your stories and products.
Create a press list
It is cheap to create a press list and can pay off. Here are four steps to easily create your own press list.
- Set your target audience. Who are you trying to reach with your message and story? Defining who you want to target will help you narrow down who should be on your media list.
- Start with who you know. Have you already worked with some journalists and/or influencers? Add them to your press list first.
- Do some online research. Use Google, Twitter and LinkedIn to find people who cover topics that your target audience would be interested in.
- Fill in details. You can be as specific as you’d like in a press list and include anything. It can be from just names to details on each journalist/influencer. Furthermore, it can be their location, social media handles and where they work.
There are plenty of paid tools available to create or buy a press list, like Cision, Muck Rack or PressRush. However, if you are just starting with a media list, you don’t necessarily need to spend a fortune to get results.
Once your media list is done, it’s time to start pitching! You may want to send them a press release to give the people on your media list somewhere to start. Read our recent post on how to write a press release <ADD LINK>.
