The difference between owned and earned media
Within PR, we distinguish between 2 types of media, namely owned and earned media. Both types help your company gain visibility, name recognition and reputation. We are happy to explain the difference.
A combination of owned and earned media will help you achieve the most! Of course you want to be seen and found, so it’s important to share your publications on your own channels as well.
Owned media
By owned media we mean all channels owned by the company. For example:
- website
- social media
- newsletters
As a company you can hardly ignore being active on these channels, they give your company a face, a story. It also provides the opportunity for followers to interact and keep them informed of developments within the company.
Earned media
With earned media, control is somewhat relinquished. It creates the opportunity to talk about the company and this is done for example by:
- reviews
- word of mouth
- retweet
Free Publicity
Free publicity is also earned media, because free publicity also means that people talk about the company and that the publications do not come from the company itself. Moreover, Free publicity involves all kinds of publications, such as magazines, podcasts, newspapers, blogs or websites. All these media are looking for stories, like yours, to fill their publication with.
Owned + earned = success!
Did you manage to appear in the Financieel Dagblad with your unique story? Did you receive a review? Or did you share tips about your expertise in a relevant podcast to draw more attention to your company? Of course then it is a good idea to mention this on all your own owned channels and to refer as many readers, viewers and listeners as possible to your publication.
