Sometimes you have to take your own photos of a press event. 4 tips on how best to do that.
4 tips for photographing a press moment
Maybe you’re going to do something special soon. Perhaps you’re thinking about launching your book or podcast, or you have an appealing speaking engagement. It could be that there’s no photographer there, but you need photos. If so, read on, because with a little smartphone, you can do this yourself.
1. Photograph horizontally
The ideal photos of a happening are horizontal photos. These are pictures in the width. Photos where all the people are in the picture. Of course at the building to be opened, with the book or new product in their hands.
A few examples:
2. Also make zoomed in photos and a short video
Journalists like to pick and choose and you have your social media channels to fill. Therefore it is useful to take some more zoomed-in photos with you (as speaker) or expert. Think of photos taken from the chest up. The best part is when the people or you in the photo make matching faces. Happy, optimistic or upbeat – that’s what makes people happy.
For LinkedIn and Instagram stories, also consider a horizontal photo or short video. A horizontal photo for social media certainly does not have to be as official as the press photos. A short video explaining why what you do is important (as a speaker, expert or professional) fully satisfies to share on your social media channels.
3. Too many photos rather than too few
Take too many photos rather than too few at the press event. Being able to choose is important.
4. Do not send your photos via WhatsApp
Tip: if you have a PR agent, do not send her your photos via WhatsApp. It makes them smaller, which is a shame. Share them for example via WeTransfer (you can put the app on your phone) or iCloud. Select the photos, click ”create icloudlink” and share this link. Then your PR agent can download them in the original format.
