The video above is of course a bad media attention from America. The country where you are quickly top of not. But also in the Netherlands bad publicity can haunt you for a long time. An acquaintance of mine asked absurd amounts for consultancy. Before he knew it, they asked him if he wanted to visit a consumer program. He had real balls and joined in. Afterwards he lost a lot of customers. That’s a shame and he could have prevented it.
Madonna said ‘there is no such thing as bad publicity’. – but for a Dutch company bad publicity can have serious consequences. I can’t give you five tips on how to prevent bad publicity in all situations. But I can give you some brief advice to take with you to avoid bad media attention.
What is useful to prevent bad publicity:
First of all, be good to your customers.
Always leave your customers better off that you found them. That saves you at least publicity in programs like “Opgelicht” and “Radar”. It also helps with how people call you on social media. Negative news always spreads faster than positive news.
Second: get a lot of good publicity
If someone ever writes something ugly about you and it’s your only interview ever or the only piece of publicity about your company…. then you have a real problem. But if it comes between all those other interviews, it matters a little less. Still annoying, but it can be resolved in a short time to avoid bad media attention.
Third: be honest
Should something not go as planned: be honest and say sorry. I can’t explain much more about this. Remember the saying: you can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.
